(Prologue + Scene 1)
Plot
A Summer Student (Mileva) will be visited by the ghosts of physics past, present and future: Maxwell will tell of the arrogance of the "classical physicists", Physic's past tells of the happy early days of QM, full of excitement and new discoveries, Physic's present tells of the dull state we are in now, Physic's Future tells of the horror that is to come, when the scientific era has ended.
Prologue
Mileva is sitting at her desk, she has some big scary books, which she is feverently reading. There could be a screen behind her, showing what she is doing on her laptop.
Enter Maxwell…

Maxwell    : (shouts) Don't fall asleep!
Mileva    : I wasn't, I wasn't sleeping, I was thinking, really.
Maxwell    : Terrible, terrible!
Mileva    : Who are you?
Maxwell    : The horror, the horror!
Mileva    : What the hell is going on?
Maxwell    : Ghosts!
Mileva    : (cannot believe what she is hearing) What?!
Maxwell    : The three ghosts of physics will come to visit you!
Mileva    : Oh my god, you've gone crazy!
Maxwell    : The ghost of physic's past will show you the arrogance of your way...
Mileva    : That's enough, who are you?
Maxwell    : (thrown off course) Who am I? I am James Clerk Maxwell!
Mileva    : Right, so you're the first ghost?
Maxwell    : What? No, I've come to warn you of the three ghosts of physics!
Mileva    : So how do I avoid them?
Maxwell    : Don't fall asleep!
Mileva    : Yeah, but that would be too late now.
Maxwell    : I beg your pardon?
Mileva    : I'm already sleeping, aren't I?
Maxwell    : I'm sorry, you lost me!
Mileva    : Right, Maxwell. Now I remember you. You're the guy that was mucking about that ether stuff.
Maxwell    : Mucking about? Me? I am one of the greatest physicists of my time!
Mileva    : Yeah, I know, you were from just before the great revolution that turned our view of the world around. Stuck between Newton and Einstein. Not a clue. Poor guy.
Maxwell    : Well, this is quite enough, you silly girl. I am this close of handing you over to the big scary ghosts, you know!
Mileva    : So what are you then? You're the nice little ghost?
Maxwell    : Right! That's it! Now you've done it young lady! There's three ghosts coming, one from the past (Mileva tries to interrupt) NO NOT ME ANOTHER ONE, one from the present (Mileva tries to interrupt) YES YOUR PRESENT NOT MINE and one from the future, and there's nothing you can do about it. There you have it. (Muttering) Stupid arrogant physicist. Well, she'll learn. (louder) Oh yes you'll learn. Mark My words! You will learn all right!
    (Maxwell off. Mileva is standing a bit dazzled on stage, not quite sure what to make of this strange man.)

 
Scene 1: The Past
Mileva is not completely sure what just happened. She returns to her books, but as soon as she looks at them she falls asleep. Einstein enters. He is dressed like a nerd, ribbed pants, sandals, the works. Very childishly, he sneaks up behind her, and yells.
Einstein    : Booh!!
    Mileva jumps up, Einstein is rolling on the floor laughing.
Mileva    : Who the hell are you?
Einstein    : I am so, so sorry. Let me introduce myself: I am the greatest scientist of the last century. However, I never lost touch with my inner child! (Sticks his tongue out to the audience, Einstein style)
Mileva    : Ah, Albert Einstein. You're the second ghost. The first, I mean.
Einstein    : Very good, I am impressed. Yes, I am the first ghost. You're a smart girl. What is your name, young lady?
Mileva    : Mileva.
Einstein    : Mileva… I knew a girl called Mileva once...
Mileva    : Right, excuse me for rushing this, but have you got something to tell me?
Einstein    : What? Yes! Of course. I forgot. (austere voice) Yes, you arrogant physicists! Gotta show you the error of your ways! Yes, so you think you know it all by now, do you?
Mileva    : Well, no, not all, obviously, I mean there's the Higgs, or rather there isn't, there's dark matter….
Einstein    : (interrupting, animated)Not all?! Not all? Not all she says! Stupid little girl! (Godfather-style:) You know nothing. Nothing! You got it all wrong!
Mileva    : What do you mean, we got it wrong, the theories are tested to the highest precision!
Einstein    : Right, not so smart after all, are you. Well, let me show you: In the beginning of the last century, a great discovery was made, that would forever change the way physicists think about nature.
Mileva    : (Trying to show she knows what he is talking about, she is a bit hurt by the 'not so smart' remark) I know, Thompson's discovery of the electron (an electron walks on stage)
Electron    : Tsding, I'm electron!
Einstein    : (Coldly) Special Relativity. Followed shortly after by the second great revolution.
    (Electron disappears with the speed of light)
Mileva    : (Obviously trying to make up for the first big insult) The photo-electric effect? That one is yours, isn't it?
    (electron reappears, photon from the other side, heading for a collision)
Einstein    : General Relativity. (electron and photon break, just in time, and walk of stage disappointed) A completely new concept of how we view space and time! (Space and time walk on, proudly?)
Mileva    : Only applicable when looking at objects a million billion miles away from our planet. Oh, and mercury, of course.(S&T look puzzled at Einstein)
Einstein    : But of great philosophical significance!
Mileva    : And of no practical use.
    (S&T give up, go off)
Einstein    : (excited): Ah, yes, you're right. No practical use whatsoever. No, thinking all day about some particles that NOBODY ordered, THAT's useful, is it? Don't you talk to me about useful!
Mileva    : So, what do you want to talk about then?
Einstein    : You.
Mileva    : (Drones the standard Summer student introduction) Well, I am Mileva, I'm a Summer Student here at CERN, I work for the LHCb experiment, on the calibration of the muon chambers…..
Einstein    : (halfway through) Boring, boring, boring! No, I mean you modern Particle Physisicists (spitting, actually saying pysisisicists).
Mileva    : What about us?
Einstein    : (Dryly)You got it wrong.
Mileva    : What do you mean?
Einstein    : (singing, like Gollum, makes Mileva sit down) Wrong, wrong wrong, all wrong! (teaches) Quarks? Don't exist. Electrons? Not a wave, not elementary, oh and by the way, positrons? Don't exist. The Higgs doesn't exist either, but you must have realized that, right? No? Ah, and here's me thinking you're smart. No, it's all wrong, based on theories that should not have started in the first place!
Mileva    : So, you know better I guess?
Einstein    : (embarrassed) Uuuhhmmm. No, sorry. No, that's the ghost of physics future, I'm afraid. (suddenly shouting) Bastard! Wouldn't tell me anything. Oh, how I begged him for the (crescendo) Ultimate Knowledge. The Final Answer. The Benefit of Hindsight! And do you know what he said? (mimics Vulcan greeting) "Live long and ignorant". BASTARD!
Mileva    : (Enjoying some joke) So this ghost denied the great Einstein the ultimate Knowledge?
Einstein    : (Oblivious of her joke at his expense) Yes! I even offered him all my wisdom, the result of a lifetime of thinking and questioning everything. Do you know what he said? "Aahhh, you made it all up anyway."
Mileva    : Well, that's really funny!
Einstein    : What? Why is that funny?
Mileva    : (Arrogant)Because, if I am getting this ghost business right, he WILL tell me.
Einstein    : Is that so?
Mileva    : Well it's kinda obvious, isn't it? I mean, I know my English literature, I know how this is supposed to go right: The ghost of physics future will show me where all this will end. (this remark is kinda painful for Einstein). The ghost of physics present will show me the consequences of my actions, and the ghost of physics past, that is (turns to Einstein, pokes him in the chest) YOU, will show me where it all went wrong!
Einstein    : Riiighhtt…
Mileva    : So?
Einstein    : What?
Mileva    : When did things start to go wrong?
Einstein    : Aahhh, that I know. Don't you get it yet?
Mileva    : Get what?
Einstein    : Ts ts ts, not so smart at all, nono. Well let me show you how things are supposed to be:
----MUSIC EFFECT----
Einstein    : In the right corner we have: Sir... Isaac... Newton!!!!!
    (Newton on, eating an apple, of course)
Einstein    : And in the left corner: Socrates!!!!!
    (Socrates on, drinking his cup, triumphantly showing the empty cup to the audience.)
Einstein    : Welcome, gentlemen. Places….(Both men take their place at the black board) GO!
Socrates    : (Writing) αλλ ι κνωυ ισ θατ ι κνωυ νοθινγ
Newton    : (Writing) dv/dt ~ F
    F=m*a
    F->(action)=-F->(reaction)
    F_grav=Gm_1m_2/r^2
--BUZZER—
    (Newton starts explaining his law in a loud voice, Socrates the same, through one another, high pace)
Newton    : The second law states that the rate of change of the velocity of any body, be it celestial or otherwise, is proportional to the force acting on the body divided by its mass. If we now apply this theory to celestial objects, we find an inverse square relationship between the gravitational force and the distance between the two bodies, (here Socrates stops!) with a proportionality constant which I will call G, as in Djee, I am smart!
Socrates    : Well as the natural state of the human mind is doubt, the natural way to wisdom is through asking questions. The benefit of this theory is twofold: One: I am an incredible wiseass, and I can get away with asking questions to everyone, thus showing my incredible wisdom, and Two, as there is nothing easier than asking questions, I am basically done with this philosophy thing, all I need now is someone to write this crap down.
--BUZZER—
Einstein    : Right, gentlemen, thank you very much for your valuable contributions to the advancement of human knowledge. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the points. First, of course, there is truth. Well, Newton takes the prize there, as was able to explain the orbits of all planets very accurately... Well, except for mercury. Congratulations, Ice. (Newton makes victory motions) Right, second category, Beauty! There is more to a theory than just predictions, you know. It has to be concise, one formula that says it all, really. Socrates, one point! (Socrates' turn to be happy). Third category: Charm. (looks at Newton) Your theory may be good, but if you can't sell it, it's worthless. I am sorry Newton, Socrates again. (idem) And now, the final category. Will Newton draw level, will there be a final round, will we subject these theories to experiment? Noooooo, Socrates wins on strangeness!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Einstein    : (to Mileva) That is how things used to be, Man to man, or mano a mano, as the Spanish say. Mind against mind, an ongoing battle, and may the wisest man win! Now, big collaborations, theories too big for one head, experiments too large for one hand! This is why we'll fail. Everybody is thinking of his own little thing, trying to construct a better whole. But a thousand good bricks don't make a solid building! It is just a matter of time. It's not the final answer that you'll find, but your basic mistake!!! (Einstein disappears, leaving Mileva standing forlorn and desperate on stage)

Scene 2: The Present
(Mileva is on one side of the stage. Higgs comes close to her, hardly realises her presence, and talks to the audience)
Higgs    : Hi. My Name is Peter Higgs. You may remember me from films such as (says all the film names very slowly) "My Life as a Boson of the Standard Model", "Breaking the Symmetry of the Standard Model" and "Who the Hell cares about the Standard Model anyway?". Today, I want to talk about the LHC. The LHC – or Large Hadron Collider – is basically one big machine, built for a single purpose:
    (Music: The Blue Danube, J. Strauss)
    (pp-collision: 2x3 people appear, with red/green/blue t-shirts and and 2 arrows pointing upwards, one downwards: 1x↓, 2x↑2x2 move on, the other 2 (red and blue) grab a string (which is red & blue, obviously) and start pulling. 2 new quarks appear (qq), cut the string, and the two pairs disappear)
Higgs    : (removing a tear drop from his right eye, very touched) Yes, this is what we will do at the LHC. (very pathetic) We will boldly go where no man has gone before, putting particles at speeds that God can't even dream of, until they meet their final destiny in a collision of…
Mileva    : (interrupting): Pretty childish.Higgs (for the first time really realises Mileva – stops looking at the audience and turns to her, rather surprised than angrily) What? (turning at the audience again, this time inconfidently) We will boldly go...
Mileva    : (interrupting): Ya ya. Childish. Did that at the age of 2: Taking bigger & bigger stuff, making them crash harder and harder, and then just looking what happens… Well, boys will be boys.
Higgs    : (now really angry, but remaining silent for 1s, then relaxes): Whatever. This is a very exciting era for physics.
Mileva    : Boring.
Higgs    : (determined): Exciting!
Mileva    : The physicists of the old school left their castles in bravery, with their laboratory as their battlefield, their minds as swords and their students as slaves. But now? Your sword is a blunt pen, your battlefield a sheet of paper – nothing new to be found, you're only defending the discoveries of the last centuries. AND YOU'RE FAILING!
Higgs    : Failing?
Mileva    : (appears bored): You're about to surrender Newton's law…
Higgs    : (getting angry): Dark matter exists and we WILL find it!
Mileva    : …and to surrender the standard model…
Higgs    : (completely mad now): Thou shalt not doubt (The Rock-Style: ) The Higgs! (this scares Mileva) In 2 years time… (we will find the final answer!)
Mileva    : (interrupting) Yes, yes… the Large Hadron Collider. Pfff.. And not only are you failing both at the large and the small scale: What about (break of 1 second, then like a lightning:) CP-Violation?
Higgs    : (turning from completely mad to totally cold in less than 1 second): We do not talk about CP-Violation.
Mileva    : But CP…
Higgs    : (interrupting) Sssshhhh… (this time a little more loudly:) We do not talk about CP-Violation!
    (During their last lines, Mileva & Higgs leave the center of the stage slowly. A red up-quark appears all out of a sudden)
Quark    : Bloody Ws!
Higgs    : (aside, quite shocked, talking to off-stage) What is this quark doing outside of confinement?!?
Quark    : Bloody Ws!
W    : (appears, very politely) I beg your pardon, Sir?
Quark    : I said Bloody CP violating bloody Ws!
W    : Sir, if u continue to insult me I may consider interacting weakly!
Quark    : What do you mean?
W    : I will do you down! And after I'm done changing your flavor…
Quark    : (interrupts) You'll decay before you do that, you imaginary bloody fake particle!
    (W & q get closer to each other, their faces full of hatred. The fight seems to be unavoidable.)
Higgs    : Gentlemen… (raising his voice) GENTLEMEN! Shouldn't we stick together in this era of a new hope for physics! I'm trying to show Mileva the beauty of the quantum world!
Mileva    : Beauty? This is a mess! Einstein was right... Weren't quarks supposed to be this cute tiny fuzzy lil thingies? Now look at them, they are scary. What the hell is going on here?
Higgs    : (While W & q leave the stage in a silent struggle, takes Mileva's hands, leads her to the other side of the stage, while walking slowly) This is a tough time for the particle zoo. Everybody's just talking about (The Rock-Style, Mileva gets scared again) The Higgs, considering them as pure background – poor tiny things, charged with emotions. And now for something completely different (reaching the other side of the stage). Forget about the particles and - (very pathetic) let me introduce to you: A new era of hope for physics!
    (Lights go on – spot on a table: 2 physicist are sitting there, a teacher of about 40-50yrs, very calm, the other one is an enthusiastic PhD-student – in the middle of a discussion. Both of them with a bottle of beer in front of them, and a 24+6-pack, half empty, on the table. They take a sip of beer occasionally during the dialog)
Student    : ... and Heisenberg published his Uncertainty Principle at the age of 23, Dirac postulated antimatter when he was only 27 and…
Teacher    : (interrupting) … and?
Student    : ...and I am 28!
Teacher    : (sighing) The world has changed since the ancient times of particle physics. You can't just go to your lab and discover the electron during your coffee break anymore. The experiments are getting larger and larger – and at the same time (gets up & raises his voice) more and more exciting! (very pathetic) In a collaboration of hundreds of nations, thousands of people, it is like... like... like...
Student    : ...like an ant-hill!
Teacher    : (still pathetic) Yes, like an ant-hill! (confused) Err.... ant-hill?
Student    : (a little desperate) Yes, I can't help it, master! I know we are close to a new era of physics, but I can't help feeling like a small ant. (getting enthusiastic) When I studied physics, you know, I dreamed of building my own experiment... of observing... of finding my own particle!
q & W     (the ones which struggled before – walk from one side of the stage to the other, now holding hands, W talking): Mission impossible... All of us have been discovered already!
Higgs    : (still observing) Shhhh... (shouting) All of you, except for the Higgs!
Student    : (to T): Did you hear that? Anyway... none left, except for the Higgs!
Teacher    : And now you are searching for it, my young padawan, you are!
Student    : (cynically) Yes, I am... together with thousands of other ants! I dreamed of building my own experiment, and now look at what I am doing: I write root-macros to make sure that for test beam number 1713, all pions with energies between 90 and 91 GeV, coming from an angle of 0.7 radians, arriving in one of the subdetectors of one of the detectors of one of the experiments of the LHC indeed have energies between 90 and 91 GeV. That's the way I spend the best days of my life...
Teacher    : (sighing) The dark matter is strong with you, young padawan, if you don't learn to control your emotions then you will end up just like your father! Patience ought to be a young physicist's virtue. In this new era of physics, mankind has to work together to achieve what a single person could not achieve in a thousand of years! You cannot go out and search for the Higgs... stay here, be patient, and wait until the Higgs comes for you!
Student    : (ashamed) Yes, master, you are right. In this era of hope we have to stick together, (raises his voice) physicists of the world: Unite!
Teacher    : In this greatest battle of all ages we will not fail. Driven by your youth, you only focus on yourself and not on our challenge. Today it seems like the work of an ant to you, but one day you will get the chance to prove your skills! Be patient!
Student    : Yes, master! (takes a sip of his beer) May the Higgs be with you...
Teacher    : May the Higgs be with you!
    (lights go off slowly, spot on Higgs & Mileva again)
Mileva    : What's this? Star Wars? Any reason why you are showing these two nerds to me?
Higgs    : (sadly) You don't understand it, do you? (looks down at the floor, silence for a few seconds)
Mileva    : (turning to H, getting closer, feeling guilty) You really believe they will find the Higgs? Listen, I don't mean to make you sad. Just... You know, it's possible that they won't find anything. No Higgs discovered, no Higgs existing, no Higgs around!
Higgs    : (everytime M says "no Higgs" he reacts as if somebody stabbed him – recovers, determined) Young lady! This is pure blasphemy! If all young physicists doubted our axioms... well, look at this:(waves his hands – Student & Teacher appear again, Student walking & looking at his notebook, Teacher behind him)
Student    : (excited) I found it! There it is... a clear signal – no doubt about it! Oh my Higgs, what would life be like without you?
Teacher    : (calm) Patience, young padawan, patience! I can feel the presence of the dark matter (looks in the approximate direction of Mileva) You think you found the Higgs? Tell me – how many sigmas?
Student    : (pushing some buttons) Well... 3.
Teacher    : 3 sigmas? We need at least 5 for Stockholm!
Student    : But master...(walking off the stage while talking)
Higgs    : (triumphating) Ha, told you!
Mileva    : (overwhelmed, close to tears) Oh my god... I've been dreaming of this since I was a little girl – this is living history! (her mood changing from affection to hilarious joy within a moment, shouting, dancing) They found it... they found it... they really really found it!
Higgs & Mileva: (She grabs Higgs' hands, they dance like children, moving towards the exit): Found it, found it, found it, .... (exit)
Student     (appears with notebook for a few seconds): This is a disaster! 1.7 sigma and decreasing! Mileva (after S left) walks on again, euphoric about the discovery of the higgs, still dancing / singing

Scene 3: The Future
(Mileva at the center, still euphoric. Spock enters, Vulcan greeting)

 
Spock    : Live long and prosper!
Mileva    : You have got to be kidding me!
Spock    : (insulted) Of course not! I'm here to guide you.
Mileva    : The ghost of physics future, I take. They could at least have sent me a real physicist!
Spock    : That's precisely the attitude that will keep you in the stone age forever. You're so bursting with assumptions that you'll never think of anything new!
Mileva    : And that is precisely the attitude that will keep you in fiction forever! You're so fixed on new ideas that you completely lose sight of reality! (short pause, ~ 550 ms)
Spock    : Well, if your definition of "reality" is "everything that I find convenient", then yes, you could call me fiction. However, normally one calls reality "that which we can experience".
Mileva    : Lalala I see no ghost lalala we found the Higgs, lalalala.
Spock    : A little late to be convincing.
Mileva    : Ok, mister "I know all about your future", tell me this: What is the theory of everything? How do we use it when we find it? Which stocks are going to rise?
Spock    : To your first question: There is none, so your second question is irrelevant. Concerning your third question: Barbaric species.
Mileva    : What!(Really, really shocked)
Spock    : Yes! Humans are a barbaric species.
Mileva    : (interrupts) No, I mean, no theory of everything?
Spock    : What do you expect! (Incredibly sarcastic)You're not thinking that you get close, are you? (mocking) We unraveled the quantum structures! We know all the marvels the LHC could possibly produce, and more! Finally, we understand nature! (normal) Don't tell me you believe that!
Mileva    : Well, the search is never over, of course. But we've come a long way.
Spock    : Really? So, explain to me, how far are you when LHC has run for 10 years, and turns up with nothing new whatsoever?
Mileva    : Still further than we are now. We will have learned that our understanding of nature contains flaws, since we must see the Higgs if the standard model is correct.
Spock    : But without any hints to what is wrong you won't find a better theory. You will only have realized that your best isn't good enough!
Two ex physicists, John and Mark enter the stage. They do not see Spock & Mileva. They look like homeless: raggs, crappy hair, El Cheapo can of beer. They sound drunk.
Mark    : "Study physics", they said. "It has a future" (John sighs), they said.
John    : "Find new particles", they said.
Mark    : Well it was not the detectors! They were great!
John    : But we didn't see the Higgs! Or, or ... SuSy! Or, or ...
Mark    : Monopoles!
John    : Yes, Monopoles... or midget black holes! It's impossible. It was sabotage!!!
Mark    : (mildly interested) No (Drops beer bottle) NO!
Mileva    : Sabotage?!
John    : Minds the size of a planet, and look at us now!
Mark    : But it was fun. John, no matter what, never forget the LHC!
John    : Those were the days Mark, those were the days.
Spock    : Meet John and Mark, physicists. Or, I should say, former physicists.
Mileva    : They are crazy!
Spock    : Yes, they are! They are completely mad with frustration. They can't believe they got it wrong!
    (Mirror exercise starts with four actors, to depict SuSy, Mileva does not notice)
Mileva    : Well, this is not going to happen. The Higgs is there, and we found it! And much more!
Spock    : You are kidding yourself. There is no reason to believe that.
Mileva    : Oh, and I assume that you know better?
Spock    : Well, as a matter of fact, I do. Do you see that?
Mileva    : What about it?
Spock    : Do you know what it is?
Mileva    : That must be supersymmetry.
Spock    : Yes, that is what you would call it. In our more advanced culture, however, we call it superSTITION.
    (Mirror game fails. SUSY partner drops. Particles shrug and walk off)
Mileva    : Big deal! Nothing a good bunch of extra dimensions can't solve!
Spock    : I take it you're talking about "strings".
Mileva    : (excited) Yes, six extra dimensions all curled up in one tiny little ball!
    (Movie/sheet of dancing strings)
Spock    : Puh! Purely mathematical constructs.
    (Circles on screen)
Mileva    : But mathematics is a scientist's language!
Spock    : Aha! But according to Gödel's theorem mathematics can't be complete and consistent at the same time!
Mileva    : Which means…?
Spock    : That a mathematical description is either incomplete…. Or wrong! (With a self-satisfied smile)
Mileva    : What! I thought you guys were addicted to logic!
Spock    : It is not an addiction. (pause, breath) Logic is just the logical consequence of thinking straight.
Mileva    : And boy you Vulcans are straight! So, logically, how do we describe nature now?
Spock    : It's obvious, isn't it? If any logical system is doomed, the logical solution is to abandon strict logic.
Mileva    : Aha, but this cannot work, as it is a logical step!
    (silence, Spock gets angry, hides it poorly)
Spock    : Of course it works! For instance, look at the perfect harmony of time, matter and forces united:
    A&S move to the side taking up watching positions. enter: Time (T), Space(S), Matter(M), and Forces (F) hand in hand in a circle)
TSMF    : We are one. We are the divided union of nature and perception.
Time    : Different manifestations of the eternal and the instant.
Space    : All you see comes from the logically illogical.
Matter    : We are the consistently inconsistent.
Forces    : We commence, we move, we cease. Time is irrelevant.
    (Time gets thrown out)
Spock    : A logical choice.
SMF    : The instant is now eternal.
Space    : Change is an illusion.
Matter    : We are where we are.
Forces    : Space, it's time to go.
Mileva    : But time didn't exist, right?
    (space gets kicked out)
